Skateboarding History: 101

1940’s: Originally named sidewalk surfing, using wooden boxes with roller skates attached to the bottoms.

1950’s: While the actual board (itself) can’t be attributed to a single inventor, the style of many of today’s skateboards took form when California surfers were looking for a physical activity to keep them tuned during times when the waves were flat. The first manufactured skateboards were ordered by a Los Angeles surf shop and were designed to be used by surfers during their downtime.

1960’s: Additional manufacturers of surfing equipment jumped on the scene and created skateboards made to resemble small surf boards.

1970’s: Saw the first polyurethane wheels for manufactured skateboards, sparking a rise in their popularity due to the improved traction they offered to riders. Along with this came the ability to craft wider board decks up to ten inches in width, further improving a rider’s control. The first two skate parks opened in 1976 at Skateboard City in Port Orange, Florida and at Carlsbad Skatepark in San Diego, California. With the evolution of better handling, skateboarders also began to experiment with vertical tricks along the walls of empty swimming pools in California during the droughts of the 1970’s.

2006: Over 2,400 skate parks existed worldwide, many of which were designed by skaters themselves for the purpose of appealing to all skill levels.

2017: There were approximately 6.5 million skateboarders in the U.S.

Skateboarding at the 2020 Olympics will be taking place in the Aomi Urban Venue, in Tokyo.
Four medal events will be held: Men – Park & Street Women – Park & Street
Skateboarding is essentially a free performance competition. When competitors perform the same tricks, judges will take into account such factors as speed, height and combinations of moves. The composition of the overall routine is also a major factor in scoring. In both disciplines, skaters are scored based on the degree of originality, composition, style, and consistency. In the park competition, the height and speed with which air tricks are performed are evaluated, while in the street competition, the overall board control competitors exhibit while performing various tricks is taken into account during assessment.
